Although Van Gogh was influenced by the Impressionists love of light and colour in his artwork he was one of the first artists to be 'expressionistic'.
That is an individualist pre-occupied with his subjective reactions. He broke the barriers in his personal life by rejecting his family religion and many of society's conventions. In his artwork he distorted perspective and the shapes and proportions of objects in the interest of emotional expression. In his markmaking he expressed his feelings with line, direction and use of colour.
